The Reports Have Been Greatly... Huh?

Yeah, it's true.

The idea somehow scares me, though. Personally, I just wanted a little corner of the web to write on. I assure you that the act of joining the contest was done on pure whim. (Although I'm questioning myself on that right now.)

I have to thank the Philippine Blog Awards for the honor, though, as well as the individuals who have seen this web site as something worth reading. Some people say that they'll be reading as long as I'll be writing; What they don't know is that it's actually the other way around.

I offer congratulations to everyone else involved in the Awards, particularly the other winners, finalists and semi-finalists. I'll drop by your sites when I find the time, yes.

And hey -- if I start acting like one of those elitist celebrity bums, feel free to kick me, okay? It would mean a lot to me. (And to the seat of my pants, too.)

Looks like I have to congratulate you again. :D So... congratulations (2x) ^_^

Just finished reading your story in the anthology. I was looking for you last night but you seem to have escaped somewhere, ehehe.

Kat: Oh, I'm sorry. :) I wanted to escape the crowds, actually. I was running out of things to write. Heh heh.

He-eeey, congratulations! Like, how did this happen? Seems to have been under the radar....

Dominique: The Blog Awards seem to be rather low-key at the moment, actually. For that matter, I have little knowledge as to who's involved in them, or who I can properly thank. It's okay, though.

congratulations sean. i guess writing about suman and other stuff indeed paid off well for you. from one blogger to another, please receive my warmest greets.....

Anton: Thanks, Anton. Thanks very much. :)

Seeing that the Suman Latik posts started because someone noted how difficult it was to write a Suman Latik essay, I suddenly find this to be the most ironic thing I've ever seen on this blog. :)

Congrats.

As a top Filipino blogger, I'd like to hear your comments on the following story (link). Is it true? Does Manila University really ban books?

Sean said...

softwareNerd: Geez... what qualifies me to comment on the story? I didn't even go to the University of the Philippines for college or anything.

With that said, however:

"Ban" is too strong a word, I think. Every library in the world will have a tendency to select or display books according to their own tastes. In this case, if the book really has been pulled out, then I don't think it's best to jump to the conclusion that it's because it was single-handedly compromising a Marxist atmosphere.

That the University of the Philippines (not "Manila University") is a hotbed of Marxism is debatable as well. It has a reputation for being a hotbed of activism, yes, but "Marxism" is a very general descriptor. It is certainly possible for organizations and beliefs to follow some aspects of Marx's theories and not others.

Most Filipino activists I've met, for that matter, don't seem to follow beliefs of class struggle or government-centered production as much as they advocate government transparency and democracy. The latter, after all, has been a problem over here as of late, what with accusations of vote-rigging in the last elections and other developments.

As a final note, the story posted by Mr. Shousen's acquaintance sounds more than a little apocryphal. An entire circle of "Marxists" abandons their core beliefs simply because they happen to read a single chapter in a certain Economics book? The situation sounds more than a little optimistic to me. It's possible, yes, but it definitely sounds more than a little optimistic.
